The Palos or Atabales, of African heritage, are some of the oldest folkloric instruments and can be found all over the country. It consists of three hollowed-out trunks with one patch, each tied to the musician’s waist and played with the hands. They are also placed on the floor, as is the case of the Bamboule, and stroked with hands to the rhythm given by the player’s heel and the beat of a stick on the trunk to the sound of the guira.
