Jointly with the European carnival the “Maroon Carnival” exists in the Dominican Republic to mark the beginning of Spring, especially in the South Region of the country, which coincides with the Easter week festivities.
In Cabral, Barahona, “The Cachuas” exist, which are recreations of the devil, the main character of the Dominican carnival. The name “The Cachuas” is given because of the beautiful crepe or “papel vejiga”, which hides its small horns. The mask does not use industrialized paint but instead is made with “papel vejiga” of various colors. It is one of the country’s most original and beautiful masks.
