African heritage is significant in the Dominican Republic. The carnival is a special space where this cultural and spiritual presence blooms, as demonstrated by the warlocks of San Juan de la Maguana, in the country’s deep South. This is the most original and creative carnival, with the most identity nationwide.
Colors, music and song are integral elements of the expression of faith of Dominican popular religiosity. In many cases, such as this one, the remnants of African royalty heritage emerge. In Yamasa, during the San Antonio festivities of the Guillen Brothers, kings, queens, princes and princesses parade in nostalgia that is identity.
